This unit explores the Gospel of Mark, situating it in its sociological and cultural context and in relation to the other synoptic gospels. Students will employ exegetical methods to elucidate significant themes in the Gospel and their meaning for the original audience. By reflecting theologically on the narrative’s portrayal of Jesus and the disciples, they will draw insights for today.

Learning outcomes

Critique scenarios for the context of the Gospel of Mark, informed by current scholarship.

2.

Analyse the distinctiveness of the Gospel of Mark in comparison to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke and evaluate hypotheses to account for this distinctiveness.

Create well-structured arguments from analytical examination of passages in the Gospel of Mark using detailed exegesis and applying appropriate methods.

Reflect theologically on key themes in the Gospel of Mark, elucidating contemporary insights for society and the church today.

Unit sequence

BS8001C and BS8002C or equivalent Students enrolled in the unit for Master’s research degree are required to demonstrate proficiency in the appropriate biblical language(s).

Pedagogy

Each 3-hour class comprises 2 hours of interactive lecture and discussion and 1 hour of structured group discussion and interpretation focused on biblical passages and/or secondary readings.
