Delivery Notes: | Postmodernism and Religious Faith Area or Issue: I will investigate the possible influence a postmodernist approach to understanding the divine may have on Christian Faith • Particular Text and scholar: Mark C. Taylor Erring: A Postmodern A/Theology 2nd ed. (Chicago: U of Chicago P, 1999). • The key question: How does ‘belief’ function if God is neither ‘origin’ nor ‘centre.’ ? (The two essays will address different dimensions of this question). •I will answer the question by: reading Taylor sympathetically on the above topic, and debating whether he has adequate answers to critiques implied in others' accounts • (Challenge 1): Understanding exactly what it is that Taylor is claiming • (Challenge 2) : Understanding how an account of God can genuinely avoid presuming "origins and centres". |
