Business Ethics and the Ok Tedi Mine: A Case Study

This essay will examine: o the principles of human dignity and the common good, as outlined in Catholic Social Teaching and as they emerge from Biblical themes; o how these principles relate to corporate social responsibility; and o how they can be applied in particular to issues relating to the Ok Tedi mine in Papua New Guinea In short, the one question my essay will address is: "In the light of Catholic Social Teaching, what are the commercial ethical issues relating to the operation of the Ok Tedi mine in Papua New Guinea?" I will answer the question by considering the three parts oulined above in order, moving from general moral principles to their specific application. One challenge with my topic might be finding sufficient specific material on the Ok Tedi mine, but I am confident I can do so. I will also use the Compendium of Catholic Social Teaching in order to elucidate the relevant general principles.

Upon successful completion of this unit, I expect to be able to:

  1. Engage in critical dialogue with the Catholic Moral Tradition as it relates to issues of ethics in business.
  2. Articulate the concept of corporate social responsibility as it relates to Catholic Social Teaching
  3. Demonstrate the importance of biblical moral themes as they relate to business ethics.
  4. Identify and develop a research topic on moral issues relating to contemporary business practices in a sustained and self-directed manner.
