This unit is an introduction to theological impetuses of the Gospel of John within Christian thought. Major themes such as incarnation, revelation, passion and Paraclete are studied in the context of: early Christian identity, selected christological debates, existential belief and decision, Christian freedom and community. Applied work is undertaken with selected historical theological uses of the Gospel of John in formulating Christian identity and ethical values.
